Adventures In The Dark

Ted let himself in, hushing a laughing Nancy. For some reason, she found him sneaking into his own place amusing.

Not that it was sneaking. He simply didn’t want to wake up Fawn, that was all. His friend was obviously asleep, the lights out, the place quiet.

He wouldn’t mind keeping it that way.

Nothing said they had to talk right this minute.  Nothing said Nancy had to go back to residence either.  The thought of her in his more comfy bed made that alternative look da** attractive.

“Shhhhhhhh, be vewwwy, vewwwy quiet; we’re hunting wabbits,” his crazy woman was whispering in his ear as he felt along the wall. He grinned back at her, only being able to make out the white of her teeth in the dark.

She stepped back, her smile widening.

There was a whack of calf against metal, the tinny sound reverberating through the room. “Awww….” Nancy’s head knocked against his chest as she doubled up in pain.

The toolbox. The one he had made in high school shop class, completed with sharp edges and unfinished corners. He left it in the entrance way.

“Are you okay?”

“No” came the truthful reply.

Nothing they could do about it in the hallway. Once they got to the room, closed the door, and turned the light on, he’d have a look at the damage.

“Stay close to me.” Ted slid his free hand down her arm to capture hers. Her skin was so soft and warm. He turned, surging forward toward the room with renewed purpose and…

Whack. The pain in his forehead made stars explode in the dark. The closet door. Fawn must have left it open. Likely in her search for clean blankets.

“Are you okay?” Nancy whispered. Close.

Another whack. Too close. Her moan echoed his own.

“Ted?” A breathy whisper.

“Yeah?”

“Sometimes I wish you were an inconsiderate jerk.”

Ted rubbed his tender forehead. Sometimes he wished he was too.

Promises, Promises

“I could be a circus performer, don’t you think, Ted?

“You could be, if the business thing doesn’t work out for you.” Ted nervously watched Nancy traipse along the top of a wrought iron fence, ready to catch her if she fell.

“Would you travel with me?” She held out her arms.

“I would.” He lifted her down. She weighed next to nothing. “I could be your roadie.” Not wanting to let her go just yet, he swung her in a circle making her laugh.

Nancy in a good mood was a joy to behold. It had taken a lot of sweet talking tonight to get her there. What with the Fawn mess and everything.

“Are there roadies in the circus?” They stopped and Nancy leaned against him for support. Ted was a bit dizzy himself.

“I don’t know.” He couldn’t resist kissing her smiling lips again. She tasted like candy canes.

“You could be in charge of sales.” They walked towards the house, hand in hand. “You know you’re good at selling stuff.”

He was and this was going to be one of his tougher sells. “Nance.” It had taken Ted almost the entire walk across campus to get up the nerve. “About Fawn.”

Nancy’s grip on his hand tightened. “What about Fawn?” Her tone was light, the laughter still coloring it.

“She’s been a bit…” How to say it? Ted yanked at his collar with his free hand. “Emotional.” Yeah, that was a safe word.

A pause. “I suspect she would be, what with her room burning up and everything. It’d probably make me cry.”

Ted relaxed.  “When Fawn gets emotional, she doesn’t always say or do rational things.”

“Like what?” Dancing blue eyes sparkled up at him.

Likely expecting him to tell an amusing story. Recent fallouts of Fawn not getting her way flew through Ted’s mind. None of them amusing and none of them he’d share with anyone, not without a lot of guilt. He owed Fawn some loyalty.

“Doesn’t matter.” His voice was gruff. “I just don’t want you getting upset if anything happens.” If Fawn hurt Nancy…

“Don’t worry, Ted. Nothing’s going to happen.”

He wanted to believe her but “Nance.”

A slight whistle of breath through her plump lips. “Ted, I’m a big girl. I know Fawn’s your good friend. I know she’s had a crappy night. I’m not going to hold anything she says or does against her, I promise.”

Ted looked down at her auburn head with admiration. “Thank you Nancy.” He hugged her close and she laughed.

“You better be a darn good roadie, Ted.”

Company For The Pickup

“Nancy, sweetheart.” Ted nuzzled his cheek into her short, curly hair. “I should get back to my place.” He didn’t want to, boy did he not want to, but it wasn’t right to leave Fawn on her own. She’d be wondering where he was as is.

“Stay a few more minutes.” Nancy wrapped his arm around her body.

“Okay.” A few more minutes wouldn’t hurt. He spooned against her, liking the feeling of her tucked up next to him. “I wish I didn’t have to leave you.”

Sleepy blue eyes looked up at him. “Why do you have to?” He kissed that upturned nose and she smiled. “Aren’t I coming with you?”

It was tempting, dragging Nancy out of her warm bed simply so he’d have more time with her but he hadn’t told Fawn the plan yet. His gut told him it wouldn’t go over that well. “Nah, you stay here.” He rolled off of the lumpy mattress, tucking his shirt in. “I’ll be back in a flash.”

“Ted, before you go.” Nancy grabbed his sleeve. “I wanted to know, that is, did you mean what you said at the restaurant?”

“Mean.” Oh, shoot. How to get out of this one? He did love her but it had been too soon to say it.  Though he couldn’t suck those words back, he could stall repeating them.  “Nance.”

“What?” Her eyes narrowed into dark slits.

“Nance.”  What to say?

“Hhumph.” Nancy knelt, hands on her hips, glaring at him. “In that case, I’m going.”

What? “Nancy.” No, no, that couldn’t happen.

“I am.” She stomped around the room, gathering up her clothes. “There is no way I’m letting you go back alone. You are my boyfriend, no matter how you really.” Nancy rolled her eyes. “Feel about me. I’m going.”

“Nancy.” Ted tried again. She turned her back, started peeling off those Care Bear pj’s and all rational thought fled from his brain. Sh**, her body was rockin’. She bent over to tug her jeans up, giving him a great view of her tight little a$$. The sweatshirt then went on with no bra underneath. Easy access. All he’d have to do was slide his hands up…

“Ready.” Another glare from her stance at the doorway, bringing him back to the present.

Between Nancy in a feisty mood and Fawn crying her eyes out back at his place, Ted’s bad feelings were compounding by the minute.

The Unlikely Roomie

She could be mature about this, Nancy told herself. Hear Ted out. Not shake him until he realized that he loved her and not Fawn, no matter how tempting that was. “What do you need help with, Ted?” She wouldn’t promise anything until she heard what it was.

“We went to Fawn’s place, to fix her tv, you know, because it was broken.” He stared down at his feet.

“Yeah?” Nancy’s nails bit into her palms. That blonde bimbo seduced him, she knew she did. Anne was right, she let Fawn have him. Stupid. Stupid.

“Her room was on fire, Nancy.”

What? Figuratively or literally? “It was burning down?”

“Okay, no, it wasn’t on fire, fire when we got there. The firemen put it out but she can’t sleep there. She has no where to go.”

How convenient but no, that wasn’t nice. No one would burn down her place simply to land a man. “Where is she now?”

“At my place. Nancy…”

There was more. She knew it. “What?” Had Fawn seduced Ted there? Was that what happened?

“I don’t think that’s the best place for her.”

The tension in Nancy’s shoulders eased away. She didn’t think that was the best place for the gorgeous girl either. “She could stay here.” Not a great solution but better than the alternative.

Ted grinned, relief written across his face. “You’d do that?” He pushed away from the desk towards her.

“For you, Ted.” Nancy heard the huskiness in her voice as she stared up at him. “I’d do it for you.”

“Nancy.” And then he was kissing her. His lips firm, his body hard, warm, those hands slipping down her back, pressing against the cotton of her pajamas.
