Good Ideas Can Come From Anywhere

Posted on December 3rd, 2008 in Anne At College by kimber

Anne had had it up to there. As she refused to lie, she had been avoiding answering the increasing direct questions. It was getting more and more difficult to do. That’s why she called this late night meeting.

“So what the f*** is it, James?” Stevie sat, arms and legs crossed, looking as disagreeable as always.

“Mister Michaels is getting suspicious. Wants to know why you two are spending so much time together.” Anne gripped her hands tightly behind her back.

“What did you say?” Eric didn’t sound worried. His eyes sparkled, like he welcomed the confrontation.

“Nothing. He doesn’t know about…” Anne shrugged. “He thinks its business, that you two are planning to go out on your own, start your own firm. He’s worried.”

“Our own firm?” The two of them looked at each other and then a grin spread over Eric’s face. “Michaels always did have great ideas.”

Stevie laughed. Actually laughed. Years fell from her beautiful face. “That’s why he’s the boss.”

“Was the boss, you mean. James, I could kiss you.” Eric bounded towards her.

Anne took a step back. “I’d rather you didn’t.”

“Not to worry, James.” Stevie laid a hand on Eric’s chest. “This jack a$$, my new partner, is not kissing any other woman but me.”

“Why would I want to?”

Anne felt it prudent to leave.

A Closed Door Meeting

Posted on November 26th, 2008 in Anne At College by kimber

“You are a traitor, James!” Stevie flung her briefcase across the office and slammed the door shut. “A f***ing turncoat.”

“I didn’t feel up to going.” Not a lie. She didn’t feel up to watching her two bosses make kissy faces at each other.

“F*** you.” The blinds were pulled.

Anne grew alarmed. Was this it? Had Stevie been pushed over the edge? Was she going to kill her? “Stevie…”

“No more f***ing excuses, James.” Stevie’s blazer was stuffed into a bag. “I see how it is.” A drawer opened. Her shirt pulled up. “You and that jack a$$ have teamed up.” Deodorant applied.

Deodorant? It was then that Anne realized Stevie was wearing the same blouse as yesterday. The same blouse, the same blazer, but with bowling friendly pants, not a skirt. Anne’s eyes grew big.

“F***, I may be thankful, he saved my a$$, but that’s it.”

Sure. That’s why she was now wearing the emergency blazer, always kept hanging on the back of the door. “He saved your a$$ because he loves you, Stevie,” Anne found the guts to say.

“No f***ing profanities in the office, James,” she was reminded. But a smug smile curved Stevie’s lips. “And you repeat what you just f***ing said and you’ll get all our a$$es fired. Understand?”

“I understand.” A little too well. More secrets.

A Bad Burrito

Posted on November 19th, 2008 in Anne At College by kimber

“You have to eat.”

Anne tried to ignore them as Eric pushed a burrito towards Stevie. Instead she concentrated on compiling the report, the pieces spread out on the boardroom table.

“I’m not hungry, jack a$$.” There were dark circles under her boss’ eyes, as though she hadn’t slept in days.

“You’re getting too thin.” And Eric was right, she was. Stevie’s perfectly tailored suit hung off her.

“Stop.” Stevie stood. “Who do you think you are, my…” As she realized what she was about to say, her face crumpled.

“Oh, sweetheart.” Eric folded her into his arms.

Oh, brother. Anne bowed her head, giving the paper her full attention. This soft Stevie was a challenge to work with.

“You know what you need?”

“If you suggest sex again, I’m going to punch you in the gut.”

Anne managed to suppress a laugh but a smile escaped. Future wife or not, Eric tried.

“No, no, no sex. Today. I was thinking bowling.”

“F***in’ bowling? James, did this jack a$$ lose his mind while I was gone?”

Great, now she was being dragged into all this.

Before she could answer, Eric did. “Bowling. Nothing like knocking down some pins to burn off energy.”

“I’d like to knock down…”

“An hour should be long enough for you to change into something more bowling friendly. I’ll pick you up at ten.”

“And we’ll pick up James at ten-thirty.”

She was going bowling? After this long, hellish day?

“Fine.”

“Fine.” Stevie made a grand exit, slamming the door behind her.

“You don’t look so good, James.” Eric grinned at her. “You had a bad burrito or something?” He felt her forehead. It should be cool. She felt perfectly fine. “Yes, I don’t think you’ll be up for bowling tonight. How disappointing.” But his laughter said it was anything but.

Not As Tough As She Thought

Posted on November 12th, 2008 in Anne At College by kimber

“Stanley?” Anne rubbed the back of her aching neck.

“Yeppers, Hootenannie?” Her friend paused in the middle of applying eye shadow. He swore he was only practicing, not planning to go outside the apartment with it on.

“Do men like tough women?” She’d been thinking about it ever since her discussion with Eric.

“Butchmeisters? No way!” Stanley flayed his fingers out. “If they have any taste at all, they like sassy, young hairdressers/make up artists with…”

“Straight men, Stanley,” Anne clarified.

“Oh.” He looked dumbfounded. “How would I know? I don’t understand straight men at all. Those men are messed up creatures. Why? Are you losing one to a tough chick, Annie Flannie?”

“I wish.” Anne’s mouth twisted. “Unfortunately, I AM the tough chick.”

“You?” A pause and then peals of laughter. “You? Tough?” More laughter, followed by a snort, and then more laughter. “You” A finger pointed in her direction.

“What’s up?” Nancy wandered into the living room, a smile on her lips.

“Annie… oh…” Stanley was doubled up, clenching his stomach.

“Anne, what is it?” The red head turned to her for an explanation.

She didn’t have one except maybe there was a flaw in Eric’s theory. “Nance, do you think I’m a tough chick?”

Blue eyes widened. “You? Someone called you tough? You? Were they on drugs?”

“Tough… old… broad…” Stanley gasped out between laughter.

“Our Annie?” Those two exchanged looks and started laughing.

Something told Annie she wasn’t as tough as she thought she was.
