The Future Wife
“That should do it.” Eric stretched, yawning noisily. “Good work, James. Stevie’ll be happy.”
“Will she?” Anne hoped so. She sounded so sad on the phone.
“No.” A laugh. Eric was always laughing. “She’ll give me that eat sh** look of hers and say, ‘we’re even, jacka$$.’” He made it sound like an endearment.
“Even?” Anne was interested, despite being bone tired.
“A major deal went south three years ago. Stevie, without a word, bailed me out. Kept me my job but cost her the leadership award.”
“That’s why?” He was doing this? That disappointed Anne. She thought…
“Stevie thinks so but nah, it isn’t.”
“Then…?”
“Can’t let my future wife suffer, James.” A lopsided grin. “What kind of man do you think I am?”
Future wife? Stevie? Anne simply stared.
Another laugh. “Now don’t go spreading that around. I trust you to keep a tight lip on it. That information isn’t your own either. Stevie would, as you say, freak.”
“She would…”
“Especially as she doesn’t think I’m serious but a man, a real man, can’t let a woman like Stevie get away. She is one in a million.” His eyes glowed. “You remind me of her, James. Reminded Michael, that old stick, of her too. Tough.”
That was a good thing? Tough? Didn’t men like softer women like her sister Ginny?
“Yeah, someday a man will cover for you, James, and you’ll know why. You’ll know why he did it. Keeping his future wife happy.”
