“I feel terrible.” Anne paced around Stanley’s bedroom, wringing her hands. “Here Fawn is, going through all this, and we made her life even more miserable.”

“We didn’t know, Annie Bananie,” but her flippant friend sounded abashed.

“And” Ginny shrugged. “She didn’t want us to know. Why didn’t she want us to know? Why didn’t she want TED to know?”

Anne glanced at the doorway. Nancy, wanting some privacy, had stepped outside to use the payphone to call Ted. She didn’t want her to overhear this speculation. Because that was all it was. They didn’t truly know what was going on in Fawn’s pretty head. “You think?”

Big raspberry. “Well, duh. She said as much. A girl like Fawn isn’t going to raise a child alone.”

Stanley’s eyes lit up. “Looking for a baby daddy?”

“It could have worked too.” Ginny sounded like she had seen this all before. “If she had gotten Ted interested in her as more than a friend. He doesn’t seem the type to…”

“The type to what?” Nancy re-appeared, her face pale.

“Ummm…” Ginny bit her lip.

“The type to walk away from responsibilities.” Anne didn’t think there was any reason to hide this. Ted wasn’t that type. Anyone could see that. “If he thought he was responsible which he clearly wasn’t.”

“No.” Nancy plopped down on the bed, sounding exhausted. “He wasn’t. Fawn is going back home. She’s going to tell her Mom. But if that doesn’t go well, Ted’s parents offered to help.”

Anne wasn’t surprised. It made sense that a nice person like Ted would have nice parents.

“Oh, and Annie?” Nancy pushed a short auburn curl out of her eyes.

“Yes?”

“There’s been an…” A pause. “Accident with your computer monitor.”

Now. Of all times. Right before finals. She rubbed a hand over her face. “What kind of accident?”

“There might be…” Nancy wouldn’t meet her eyes. “A shoe heel through it.”
And here Anne was, feeling sorry for Fawn.
