Battle Lines

The door shut behind Nancy and Ted and they were there alone, the two of them, in Anne’s small room. Fawn lay on her back on Anne’s brand new mattress, reading a fashion magazine Ted bought her, her feet propped up. Anne eyed her sneakers with horror. Was that grass on the treads? Smushing into her bedspread?

Fawn’s a guest, Anne reminded herself. She had to be civil.

And make conversation. Anne sighed. She liked quiet but she supposed she should. “So your room caught fire?”

The blonde glanced over at her and rolled big brown eyes. “Well, duh, that’s why I’m here. So not for your scintillating conversation, you green haired freak.”

Ouch. Any pretence of manners had left with Ted.

Not that she could argue with Fawn. She was a green haired freak, thanks to Stanley. Anne touched a lock. Only the tips were green, her brunette roots growing back.

She couldn’t deal with Fawn alone. “Would you like to meet everyone else in the house?”

“Are they all girls?”

Anne blinked. “Ummm…. Yes.” What did that matter?

“Then why would I bother?” And the girl rolled over, facing the wall, her back to Anne.

Why indeed? Anne’s appreciation for her sister Ginny increased. Ginny was gorgeous but at least that didn’t turn her into a b…

“No matter what she does, she won’t keep Ted” was tossed over her shoulder.

“Excuse me?” Anne wasn’t one for violence but this tart was pushing her towards it.

“Your friend, she doesn’t have a chance.”

So the girl thought. But Fawn wasn’t just messing with Ted and Nancy now, Anne straightened, she was messing with Anne too.
