I Love You

“You’re sure we’re not interrupting?” Anne, Nancy’s wraith of a friend, asked yet again. “We could…”

“No.” Ted laid a hand on her arm. “Stay.”

It was a selfish request.

The tension at the table had evaporated with their new tablemates. Fawn was being asked twenty seemingly unconnected questions by Stanley. Patrick was still sucking the meat off bones, impressing Ted. The man could put it away. Anne was doing an admirable job of fading into the booth cushions and Nancy, Nancy was smiling at him, cutie face lit up, her blue eyes dancing.

“You two go to high school together?” He looked at the two women, so different, one a spirited and talkative redhead and the other a quiet serious brunette.

The corners of Nancy’s eyes crinkled up. “No. We met weeks ago though Stanley and…”

“Liked each other instantly.” Anne finished. “But then what normal” emphasis on normal “person wouldn’t love Nancy?” Brown eyes considered him gravely.

“Awww…” Ted envied the hug Anne received. “I feel the same. It’s good to have friends you can count on.” A strange thing for Nancy to say with Anne nodding like she understood.

“Did you love Nancy from the start too?” He was asked.

“I loved her the moment I saw her.” The truth popped out of his mouth.

Ted didn’t realize what he had said until an awkward silence fell upon the table, even Stanley’s motor mouth falling open.

Nancy’s eyes grew wide and her cheeks flushed. What had he done? Just told her that he loved her in front of everyone?

His shirt collar was so d*** tight, cutting off circulation to his head. Ted yanked at it, trying to stretch the fabric.

He loved Nancy. Yeah, that was true but… Ted shifted in his seat.
