I Love You

“You’re sure we’re not interrupting?” Anne, Nancy’s wraith of a friend, asked yet again. “We could…”

“No.” Ted laid a hand on her arm. “Stay.”

It was a selfish request.

The tension at the table had evaporated with their new tablemates. Fawn was being asked twenty seemingly unconnected questions by Stanley. Patrick was still sucking the meat off bones, impressing Ted. The man could put it away. Anne was doing an admirable job of fading into the booth cushions and Nancy, Nancy was smiling at him, cutie face lit up, her blue eyes dancing.

“You two go to high school together?” He looked at the two women, so different, one a spirited and talkative redhead and the other a quiet serious brunette.

The corners of Nancy’s eyes crinkled up. “No. We met weeks ago though Stanley and…”

“Liked each other instantly.” Anne finished. “But then what normal” emphasis on normal “person wouldn’t love Nancy?” Brown eyes considered him gravely.

“Awww…” Ted envied the hug Anne received. “I feel the same. It’s good to have friends you can count on.” A strange thing for Nancy to say with Anne nodding like she understood.

“Did you love Nancy from the start too?” He was asked.

“I loved her the moment I saw her.” The truth popped out of his mouth.

Ted didn’t realize what he had said until an awkward silence fell upon the table, even Stanley’s motor mouth falling open.

Nancy’s eyes grew wide and her cheeks flushed. What had he done? Just told her that he loved her in front of everyone?

His shirt collar was so d*** tight, cutting off circulation to his head. Ted yanked at it, trying to stretch the fabric.

He loved Nancy. Yeah, that was true but… Ted shifted in his seat.

A Sticky Situation

“…Ted?”

What? Was Fawn asking him something? Ted tore his attention away from the tiny redhead sitting across from him. “Huh?”

There was that fleeting hard look in his friend’s eyes again. “My shirt, do you like it?” The blonde pulled at the tan fabric.

Personally, Ted thought it was a little too tight, especially around the chest area, but he gave the safe answer. “Very nice.”

That seemed to satisfy her and she smiled. Nancy, for some reason, was glaring at him. Again. Ted tugged at his collar. The evening wasn’t going well.

That silent hulkster with his shoulder rubbing up against Nancy’s wasn’t helping. “How are the ribs, Patrick?”

Ted got a grunt in return. The extent of the big man’s conversation skills tonight. Leaving him virtually alone with the two women.

The two crazy women.

Fawn, Fawn was acting funny. Even more touchy feely than usual. Like she was flirting with him. A ridiculous thought as they had been friends forever.

Ridiculous or not, Ted knew how it looked to Nancy. Not that his friend seemed to care.

“The fabric’s soft. Feel it.” Fawn slid over to his side of the booth, until their thighs touched, holding out her arm.

Darn it, Ted wanted to move away but there was nowhere to go. He was already squished up against the wall. Nancy’s blue eyes had narrowed. Ted tugged at his collar again.

“Patrick, feel the shirt.” Ted ground out.

Fawn’s date held up BBQ covered fingers. Useless.

How was he getting out of this one? If he didn’t feel Fawn’s sleeve, his friend would be insulted. If he did, Nancy would be ticked at him. Of the two… surely Fawn would understand?

“Fancy Nancy.” A squeal dang near burst Ted’s eardrums. The most beautiful sound he had ever heard.

Comparing With The Past

“What do you think about Nancy?” Honestly Ted didn’t really care what Fawn thought. He just liked talking about his girlfriend. The way she looked last night… and how she kissed…

“She doesn’t know you, Ted.” Fawn flipped her hair back.

Nancy didn’t have enough hair to flip back. Which was fine ‘cause it left her hands free to hold. “She knows enough.” He shrugged, popping another French fry in his mouth.

“She doesn’t know you like I do.” His friend laid her right hand over top his left.

Ted moved it away, uncomfortable. Didn’t Fawn know he had a girlfriend now? “She knows different stuff.” He could talk to Nancy about the future he wanted without being criticized… or reminded that those dreams had changed dozens of times in so many years.

Fawn leaned closer, her hair dangling dangerously close to the ketchup. “She’ll never have the history we have. She won’t have the prom or your first table tennis win or…”

Or memories of him being humiliated at football tryouts or that eating contest where he barfed all over his neighboring contestant or… Ted pushed those memories away. “Nancy sees me how I am now, Fawn.” The confident man that he now was.

Fawn’s lips curled back in what resembled a snarl. But only for an instance, so quickly that he thought he imagined it. And then she was smiling again. “I’m your friend, Ted.” Another clasp of his hand. “You like her and I’m sure I will too. But all I know about Nancy was what I saw yesterday.  And maybe that wasn’t her best day.”  Best day?  Nancy appeared top of form to Ted.  “How about we go on a date, a double date, you, me, Nancy and Patrick?”

Ted’s frown deepened. A double date? Share Nancy?

“Please Ted, it’ll be good for us. I want Nancy and I to become friends. We can’t do that if we don’t spend time together.”

That made sense… and he did want them to be friends. His good friend, his girlfriend. “Uh, okay, I guess.”

Crashing

“And then he said “That’s for sure.” Just like that. Can you believe it?” Nancy was getting riled up all over again simply relating the story to Annie.

“Maybe he’s glad you’re not like this other girl.”

“And after all that,” Nancy continued, ignoring her too practical friend, “he wanted to kiss me goodnight.”

“Whoa.” Anne stopped her typing, brown eyes big in her face. “Did you let him?”

“Yes.” Nancy’s cheeks flushed. “But that’s not the point.”

“I see.”

That was a humor-the-irrational-woman I see. “Ohhhh….” Nancy flopped down on Annie’s neatly made up bed, frustrated. She bounced. Why did she bounce? “Wait a minute. How did you get a new mattress?”

“I got lucky.” Anne pursed her lips as she stared into the computer screen.

“Must have. I don’t know anyone else in residence with a new mattress.” Nancy would know.  She had complained to everyone who’d listen about her sorry excuse for a bed.

“Stanley has one.”

“Stanley brought his own. You know what how anal retentive he is and…” A thought occurred to Nancy. “You brought your own too!”

“I might have but…” A stomach twisting shriek of pain from Anne. “Oh, no, I broke it. I didn’t save and now…”

Annie and computers didn’t get along so well. During their short friendship, Nancy had already figured that out. “Didn’t you auto-save?”

“Auto… what?”

“Geez, Annie, how did you get through high school?” She walked over to the computer, Annie giving up her seat. Nancy may not be able to fix the situation with Ted but she could get her friend’s computer up and running again.
